Prairie Grit Therapy Recruiting Volunteer Stylists for Sensory-Friendly Haircut Event

Prairie Grit Therapy is calling on licensed stylists to volunteer for its annual Sensory-Friendly Back-to-School Haircut Day, happening Monday, August 11.

This event helps children with sensory processing challenges receive a haircut in a quiet, supportive environment—something many families say can be more difficult in a traditional salon setting.

“Haircuts can be overwhelming for kids with sensory needs. Bright lights, buzzing clippers, unfamiliar touches—it’s a lot to process,” said Kaari Pieper, Clinic Director at Prairie Grit Therapy. “We remove those barriers and work side-by-side with stylists so the experience is safe, calm, and empowering for the child.”

Volunteer stylists will be paired with pediatric therapists trained to support children with autism, ADHD, and other developmental differences. The event includes visual schedules, sensory tools, noise-reducing headphones, and quiet rooms to reduce overstimulation. No prior experience with special needs is required—just a license, an hour or two of time, a steady hand, and a willingness to learn.
